How to run Pathomation on Mac OS using virtual machine with Windows OS

System requirements:

  1. Mac OS 10.9 (Mavericks) or later
  2.  At least 4GB RAM
  3. 50GB free space on disk
  4. Windows installation CD/DVD or bootable image file (.DMG, .ISO)

In order to run Pathomation on Mac OS you have to install VirtualBox and create a virtual machine with Windows OS.

Go to  https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads and click on “OS X hosts”.

After download the package, double click on VirtualBox-XXXX-OSX.dmg file to mount its contents.

In the opened window double click on the VirtualBox.pkg icon to start the installation process.

Click “Continue” to go to the next screen.

Leave everything as it is and click “Install” to perform the installation of VirtualBox.

Wait until the installation process is finished and close the installer.

After that, you can find a VirtualBox icon in the “Applications” folder in the Finder. Double click on it to open the VirtualBox Manager window.

 Click on “New” button on the top-left corner to create new virtual machine. A wizard will pop up to guide you through setting up a new virtual machine.

Enter “Windows 7” in the “Name” field. Select “Microsoft Windows” for “Type” (if it is not already selected) and select Windows 7 (32-bit) or (64-bit) depending of what installation version of Windows you have. Increase the memory size to be a half of the real memory (RAM) installed on the Mac machine and then click “Create” to create the virtual machine.

Leave everything as it is on the next screen and click “Create” to create virtual hard drive and finish the process.

Select the new virtual machine and click on “Settings” button to open the settings dialog.

Select “Storage” icon on top, then go to the bottom of the dialog and click on the first small blue icon to add a virtual optical drive.

If you will install Windows using virtual image disk, click on “Choose disk” in the popup window and select it. Otherwise select “Leave empty”. Then click “Ok” to close the settings dialog.

Now is time to power up the virtual machine and install Windows. Click on “Start” button on the top-left corner to run the virtual machine. The system will boot from the virtual image disk and will start the Windows installation process. Select you preferred settings to install and then click “Next”.

Click “Install now” to continue.

Accept the license terms and click “Next”

In the next window leave everything as it is and click “Next”

Click “Custom (advanced)” type of installation to install a new copy of Windows.

Wait until the installation process is finished.

After the installation is complete you have to specify a user name…

…and password.

 Actually you can skip the password because it is virtual machine and nobody will access it if he doesn’t have access to your Mac machine.

Click on “Use recommended settings” to continue.

Select your time zone and click “Next”.

Finally click on “Home network” or “Work network” to select your current location.

After that you are only one step away to have a fully working copy of Windows.  From the VirtualBox menu on the top of your screen select “Devices” -> “Insert Guest Additions CD image…”.

Then click “Run VBoxWindowsAdditions.exe” in the popup window.

You will have to give a permission to allow changes to the computer.

When the installation begins click “Next” to continue.

Leave everything by default and click “Next”

Click “Install” to initiate the process.

You will be asked to give a permission to install a virtual device. Select “Always trust software from Oracle Corporation” and click “Install”

On the final screen select “Reboot now” and click “Finish” to complete the installation.

image060After the system reboots is time to install Pathomation software. Open Internet Explorer from the task bar icon, go to http://free.pathomation.com/download and register with one of the provided options.

image062Then click on “download PMA.start” to download the software.

image064A popup bar will appear on the bottom of the screen. Click on “Run” button to start the installation process.

You will have to give a permission to allow changes to the computer.

Click “Next” to continue.

Click on “I Agree” to accept the license agreement and continue.

Leave everything by default and click “Next”.

Select the folder in which to install PMA.start or leave the default entry and click “Install”.

Wait until the installation process is completed and click “Next”.

image078Finally select “Run PMA.start” and click “Finish” to start the program.

It is possible to share folders between Windows and Mac. First, create a new folder under C:\ drive and name it “NDPI” (or whatever name you like). Then right click on it and select Properties.

Select “Sharing” tab on top of the dialog and then click on “Share” button.

Type “Everyone” (without quotes) and click on “Add” button. Select “Read/Write” in the dropdown list in the permission level column. Then click “Share” button.

Open Finder on the Mac machine, select your virtual machine and click “Connect”. Enter your Windows user name and password if needed. Then you will find the folder you have shared on the Windows virtual machine. Finally copy some NDPI images in this folder.

image088Go back to Windows virtual machine and run PMA.start. Navigate to C:\NDPI folder and select some image.
